2 highlights of the day

One highlight was the buddy project sharing session. During the session, I learned about radio telescopes.
I found out that radio telescopes pick up signals during solar storms. To assess the intensity of solar activity, one can create a receiver to determine the wavelength that is the same as that of the radio station transmitting the sun activity. With these receivers, people can know about the intensity of solar radiation by looking at the signals received. During the session, I also learnt about robots and how we have a misconception that robots are humanoids. The reasons behind these misconceptions might be viewing robot related movies such Big Hero 6 and Terminator, where the characters are humanoid robots. However, not all robots are humanoids and can be used to do things that humans cannot do, such as dangerous rescue missions. Thus, instead of thinking that robots were created to be like humans, we should know that robots can be crafted in any shape and form and for all functions. Robots do not need to be humanoids to make them robots.
The second highlight was the visit to Bulguksa Grotto and Seokgulam Temple.
Seokgulam Temple is a stunning place, and I was able to learn more about the Buddhist religion. Mr Brian, the tour guide, told us that Buddhism accepts people of all beliefs. Although South Korea is mostly Christian, most of the Koreans used to be Buddhist. I feel that this was very vital in ensuring stability and peace in South Korea. I believe that for Singapore to remain religious diversity and inter-religious understanding, Singaporeans must learn to accept each other regardless of religion, especially the new generation of Singaporeans.

2 things you've learnt about Korea

I have learnt that Busan is clean and environmentally friendly. Despite the fact that Busan's beaches are the most popular in Korea as a tourist destination, the beach that we visited earlier was much cleaner than beaches in Singapore. One reason might be because it is winter time and the are fewer visitors at the beach. However, I feel that keeping the beach clean is an impressive feat nonetheless and we should learn from them.
Something else that I found out today is that in Busan, students have a longer winter holiday as compared to the summer vacation. I figured out about this when chatting with my buddy about the holidays. This fact took me by surprise as I  always thought that Korean students had a very long summer break as compared to a shorter winter break. This newfound knowledge helps me when planning itineraries for trips to Korea so that it will not clash with local school holidays.

2 things I have learnt about myself

I now consider autumn my favourite season. The weather is not warm and not too cold, allowing for outdoor activity. The red and orange leaves of the trees give the forests a blood red colour.
I also realised that I feel more comfortable and energetic when exercising in colder weather (15-25 degrees Celsius). I felt this way when I ran down the hill for a short distance after visiting Bulguksa Grotto. I think that this is because I do not sweat as much because it is less humid and the temperature helped me to feel more comfortable, compared to the punishing heat in Singapore.

2 things I didn't do as well in

I spent a lot of time taking photos during the visit to Seokgulam Temple instead of focusing on learning about the structures and Buddhism. I think that I should keep myself focused when in learning journeys in the future. One way that I can stay focused is to put away my phone and try to take down notes using a hardcopy notebook. Putting electronic devices away allow me not to be distracted by my electronic device and to observe what is going on around me. Another way would be for me to put away everything, including my notebook and focus on what the tour guide is saying, and try to remember what he says. The reason behind why I want to put away everything is because writing on a hardcopy notebook when on the move can prove very challenging, especially if I cannot keep pace with what the tour guide is saying or I have to look out for traffic. Using a notebook results in me not being able to concentrate fully.
I also felt that my gifts and my many 'thank you's  to my buddy were not enough to thank her for her hospitality and for taking time out of her schedule to host us. I will surely show her the SST  hospitality when she comes to visit us in January.

2 things I look forward to tomorrow

I am looking forward to the visit to Busan National Museum because I want to find out about Busan's history and its role as a port city. I would like to learn more about legends and stories such as Admiral Yi and Busan's role in Sengoku Jidai.
I am also looking forward to the visit to Busan Science Centre as I would like to observe the observatory and if I have the chance, to see the sky above. I would like to find out how different BSHS's observatory is different from Singapore Science Centre's observatory.

Connect
One way in which I linked my experiences with what I have learnt during lessons in the School of Science and Technology was during the presentation on creating a radio telescope. I could apply my knowledge of how solar storms affected the Earth to the project showcase today. Many radio telescopes on Earth receive signals across the entire electromagnetic spectrum from the Sun. By creating a device that matches the frequency of the radio station/telescope receiving signals from the sun, the receiver will find out the level of solar radiation reaching Earth.

Extend
To extend on this, I was wondering if the results obtained from a single radio telescope could be trusted and if it was accurate. Thus, one way to help this project to grow would be the use several radio stations. These will serve as the sources of data and for several receivers at various frequencies to be placed across the world, creating a global network, making analysed data on solar storms readily available to the public.

Challenge
This presentation has challenged my thinking by showing me that we can make use of the electromagnetic spectrum (specifically radio waves at different frequencies) to obtain data from various sources that I never thought were accessible. This data can also be readily analysed using our methods

3 highlights of the day

Today's first highlight was the visit to Samsung - Renault Motors factory. Upon walking in, I immediately recognised the logo of the company as I have seen it in Singapore, but I never knew about the company behind this logo. The process required to construct a car is very complicated. Many man-hours are also put into building the cars that we buy, as many workers have to check for defects and problems that the machines cannot identify and fix. One examples includes screwing the right bolts in the right places at a rapid pace. This has helped me to gain a deeper understanding of the car making process and I have learnt to appreciate what I take for granted back in Singapore. This experience has also helped me to gain a better understanding out how Renault was formed and about the company's founder,  Louis Renault, and how he came into the car building industry.     The second highlight of today was being able to attend normal lessons at Busan Science High School. This allowed me to see the normal curriculum in the school and truly understand how our buddies study and live here. The teachers and students there are very close, and the students were very comfortable presenting in front of the entire class. When I attended Physics lessons, it was not the teacher who conducted the class. Instead, the teacher allowed a student to teach and carry out the entire lesson. I found his to be surprising as I have never seen this done in SST. I feel that this system is good as it will help to develop the students' presentation skills and also allow the student who is presenting to become more masterful at that particular topic. Thus, I hope we can try it out at SST in the future.
The last highlight was the Chemistry lesson where I was able to use skills and knowledge from Biotechnology lessons in SST to complete the task on gel electrophoresis.  This has helped me to see that we should not look at subjects separately. Instead, all subjects are interrelated.

3 things you’ve learnt about Korea

Firstly, the two main car manufacturers within South Korea are Kia and Hyundai. The automotive industry in South Korea is the fifth largest in the world, and is the backbone of the South Korean economy. I thought about how this relates with South Korea's exports of automobiles, and how this might benefit Busan, the largest sea port in South Korea. Since South Korea is the fifth largest automotive exporter in the world, this will surely benefit Busan by earning more revenue for the port city.
Secondly, due to Korea's past relations with Japan, many South Koreans have negative views of the Japanese. I learnt of this while speaking with my buddy. Korea was invaded several times by Japan over the course of 400 years. However, I feel that we should learn to understand each other and put our differences aside. This can be applied to Singapore, where we must learn never to hold a grudge, or risk sparking unrest in a culturally diverse society.
Finally, I learnt from my buddy that South Korean youths place a huge emphasis on doing well academically in order to study at university and find a good job. This is why they put in a lot of hard work in order to excel academically. This can be seen in class when students copy notes actively. I feel that we should learn from the youths here in order to do justice to ourselves by doing well academically and living a fruitful life.

3 things you’ve learnt above yourself

I have not been spending time engaging in my hobby for close to half a year. I found out about this because my buddy asked me about my hobby, and although I was able to tell her a lot about my hobby, stamp collection, I realised that I have not been collecting stamps for a long time because I have been studying for examinations, and subsequently my 'O' Level Chinese examination. I feel that this is not healthy and I should start collecting stamps soon to balance work and pay.
Another thing that I have learnt about myself is that I have forgotten many basics in Arduino. I first picked up Arduino during ISS last year. During today's Arduino lesson, I realised that I have forgotten how to connect pins and how to code on Arduino. I will try to catch up on these skills as they will be useful in the future when I do other projects.
The last thing I have learnt is that I have little experience with using drones. Since drones might be used for delivery of goods and even for transportation in the future, I need to pick up the skills of piloting a drone.

3 things I didn’t do so well

I was not able to construct the circuit during Arduino lesson earlier today as I had forgotten about the basics of Arduino after two years of not using it for projects. I will practice and try my hand at Arduino again during the holidays so that I can improve and this skill may prove useful for projects in the future.
My inability to understand Korean hindered my learning during Physics class today as many of the slides and instructions were written in Korean. I was restricted to trying to understand the equations and formulas written on the board, in which I faced difficulty as they were all largely unfamiliar. I will read up more on centripetal force and uniform circular motion to learn more about it.
My group and I were unable to obtain a good result of the concentration of the unknown sample for gel electrophoresis during Chemistry lesson today. I think this happened due to an error on our part. It was likely that we calculated the wrong dilution and amount of water to add in. My takeaway from this experience is that we should always do things carefully and cautiously so that we do not need to repeat the experiment multiple times.

3 things that I look forward to tomorrow

I am looking forward to the visit to Bulguksa Temple tomorrow as I will get to learn more about Buddhism.
I am excited to learn more about our buddies' projects during the project sharing tomorrow so as to learn more about their interests and their feats.
Finally, I am looking forward to the Gyeongjoo tour tomorrow to learn more about this coastal city and go near the coast to observe the shipping lanes.

3 highlights of the day
My first highlight of the day was visiting Busan Science High School for the first time, and meeting my buddy. The campus of Busan Science High School is very large, and I found out that they have an entire block dedicated to science laboratories, for Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Astronomy and Earth Science. I was given a chance to visit the Biology and Physics laboratories, and I am excited to explore the observatory if I am given a chance. My buddy also told me about her school's curriculum. I have learnt that there are many people who work hard to achieve academic excellence, even studying until 11 pm at night every day. My take-away is that we have to keep learning and improving ourselves throughout our lives to stay ahead.
My second highlight would be the traditional costume wearing lesson (Choongryeolsa
), where we learnt the proper way to wear a traditional dress such as the hanbok. The teacher who taught us to wear the hanbok as well as carry out formal Korean traditional greetings voiced his concern that traditions were slowly disappearing in Korea as they became less popular and I feel that this applies to us as Singapore is a multi-cultural society. Thus we have to work hard to ensure the survival of these traditions.
My third highlight would be the 'Infinite Ball' game where we were given styrofoam and pins to create a structure that allows marbles to keep rolling for the longest period. The objective of the game was to allow us to think about ideas to achieve our goals, using as little resources as possible. It is heartwarming to see schools in countries teaching the importance of resource management, and I hope that this will help all of us build a more eco-friendly future.

3 things I have learnt about South Korea
One thing that I learnt is that the sun rises earlier and sets earlier when it is winter in South Korea. This is interesting as I can relate this with my knowledge from Geography class. I am also interested in how this will affect humans' biological clocks, especially that of foreigners who are not used to the change in timing.
Another thing I learnt about Korea is about her history. In the 15th century, Korea was invaded by Japan during a period known as the Sengoku Jidai. Korea was invaded by Japan again during World War 2. This has helped me to learn more about the relationship between Japan and Korea in the past. Since Busan is the closest point in Korea from Japan, Busan serves as an important strategic location, and I hope to find out more by doing research, as well as asking by my buddy about her understanding on these topics.
The last thing that I learnt is that the South Korean education system has many differences compared to Singapore's. One example is that South Koreans attend elementary school for 6 years. I wish to find out more about the reasons behind these arrangements in the system.

3 things I have learnt about myself
I can speak with and interact with buddies better than before (compared to my earlier GCP trip to Beijing). I am also able to apply my skills that I picked up during the Singapore Amazing Machine Competition for making Rube Goldberg machines during the session in the imagination lab.
Lastly, I can apply my knowledge from Biotechnology classes for the Biology experiment today.

3 things I didn't do as well in
I should have spent more time talking and asking my buddy questions so as to learn more about Busan and the lifestyle here, instead of keeping myself busy with taking notes. I realise that talking with a local student would prove more beneficial and I can learn more.
Another thing I didn't do as well in is my decision not to bring my LD to school today. I should have planned ahead and brought my LD along to do my reflections on the bus.
The last thing that i didn't do as well in is not able to keep up with the lesson during Biology. My group was unable to start on DNA extraction as we spent too much time on agarose gel electrophoresis. I will tell myself to improve my time management during lessons so that I can keep pace with others.

3 things I like forward to tomorrow
Firstly, I am looking forward to the visit to the City Office of Education as I can observe and find out about the differences between South Korea's and Singapore's education system and how we can learn from each other. I am also excited about the visit to Samsung Renault motors as this is an opportunity to find out more about one of the world's leading brands in smartphone technology.
Finally, I look forward to attending regular classes with my buddy tomorrow as I would like to observe the regular classes, and draw comparisons with the classes we have in SST.

Day 1 Reflections - Timothy Kom

Daily Reflections: Day 1:

3 words to describe today’s experiences
  1. Refreshing
  2. Alien
  3. Cheerful
3 highlights of the day
My first highlight is visiting South Korea for the second time in 10 years. Although I can barely remember my past experiences here, I am glad to be back to learn more about this country. The climate of South Korea in November is very chilly compared to Singapore, and I find this to be a pleasant change. However, after many years of not coming to South Korea, I see that South Korea has many differences as compared to Singapore. Thus the environment in Busan is very alien to me. One example is that the car brands that I see in Singapore are from many different countries while the car brands I see in South Korea are mainly Hyundai and Kia, the local car brands. The next highlight was the visit to POSCO. POSCO is the world’s fourth largest steel manufacturer, and I would like to find out how POSCO contributes to the country’s economy, the port of Busan, and whether the steel manufactured there is involved in shipbuilding. I was curious to find out more about POSCO as it is closely related to the problem statement that I am researching on, which is how Singapore can learn from Busan in their management of port congestion. Lastly, I got to visit Jagalchi market, a place I can never visit anywhere else in the world. Jagalchi market is crowded and full of life, with shop owners selling their fish and tourists roaming the streets. This gives the street a very cheerful and pleasant atmosphere at night.

3 things you’ve learnt about Korea
I have learnt that a lot of food in Korea is spicy, especially during the winter. Some examples include bibimbap. Spicy food is popular during winter as it helps to keep people warm. I also realised that we should never lift a plate or bowl off the table in Korea as it is considered rude in Korean traditional culture. Finally, POSCO’s success was one of the cornerstones of South Korea’s economic growth, helping to make South Korea what she is today. Previously, I did not know about POSCO, but I came to have a deeper understanding of the company when I started researching about the sites that we would visit on the trip.

3 things you’ve learnt above yourself
I have learnt that I tend to eat more spicy food in cold weather as it keeps me warm for longer periods of time. I am sensitive to changes in the environment and might have dry eyes or dry skin when visiting a temperate country. Hence I should come prepared in the future with lip balm and vaseline to prevent my skin from becoming dry and drink more water to keep myself hydrated. I will also need to learn to write notes at a faster pace to catch key points, as this skill will help me greatly in the future, both in my academic studies as well as when I enter the workforce.

3 things I didn’t do so well
I did not get enough rest on the plane as I had a runny nose. I will try to get medication for this condition so that I will not run into such difficulties in the future. I was also unable to take notes fast enough when the tour guide was guiding us through the POSCO Museum. I will have to brush up on this skill in the future. I am not used to the spicy food that we had for lunch and had some difficulty while eating the meal. I will try my best to eat more spicy food when I am back in Singapore so that I will be more prepared for spicy food when I enter other countries.

3 things that I look forward to tomorrow

I look forward to visiting Busan Science High School for the first time and meeting new friends, as well as learn more about their mindset and lifestyle. I am also excited to learn about and experience the local culture by participating in tomorrow’s tea ceremony as this is an opportunity that I cannot find back in Singapore, and it will bring me closer to understanding Korean culture, by understanding their past. Lastly, I look forward to participating in club activities with my buddies. The variety and the type of club activities that Busan Science High School offers shows the students' interest, and I will be able to meet other students who have the same interests as I do.
